Multiple Daily Injection Therapy
More shots = better therapy
Multiple Daily Injection (MDI) Therapy is designed to release insulin like a real pancreas. With this therapy, basal (or background) insulin is provided as a once or twice daily injection of a long-acting insulin and rapid acting insulin is injected at mealtimes.
While MDI Therapy provides improved control over conventional injection therapy, it usually requires more testing and injections
Advantages:
- Improved control over conventional injection therapy
- Basal and bolus rates can be separated
Disadvantages:
- Up to eight injections daily
- Up to six fingersticks daily
- Requires carbohydrate counting
- Complicated math calculations
- Increased risk of dawn phenomenon
- Must eat when you exercise
- Need to carry insulin supplies
